What are Insulated Metal Panels?
An Insulated Metal Panel (IMP) is a strong single unit constructed of a rigid polyurethane foam core sandwiched between two sheets of coated metal that provides an exceptionally strong building enclosure.
The durable metal panel facings resist damage and create a vapor barrier which offers long-term thermal stability. The metal skins also come in a multitude of colors and textures. When compared to other exterior finish options such as stucco, masonry or pre-cast concrete, the IMP stands above the rest for its unique combination of impermeability, excellent thermal performance and visual appeal.
The IMP offers high insulation values and built-in thermal breaks that significantly improve the energy efficiency of buildings thus reducing heating and cooling costs for building owners. These built in vapor and air infiltration barriers prevent heat conductance from the metal exterior to metal interior skin.
The IMP is a single, enclosed building element, so it speeds up project completion and can be installed in almost any kind of weather without risk to system integrity. This is in contrast to multiple installation steps for other insulated wall systems that normally are field assembled. IMPs are installed using a complete concealed fastener system that typically includes the vapor barrier, air barrier, and water barrier along with a high efficiency insulation system, reducing the need for a large number of components to be installed.
The lightweight nature of the IMPs offers framing and foundation savings. They are designed to meet the most demanding performance requirements, which, when combined with the inherent benefits of metal facings, requires less maintenance than any other exterior building system.
Structures such as cold storage facilities, hangars, manufacturing plants, food processing facilities, office buildings and convention centers are proven to be excellent applications for the IMP. Architecturally, IMPs offer many design options because they are available in various joint sizes, in curved and formed panels, and with a variety of high performance coatings or surface textures. Interior coatings also provide easy cleaning and washing as well as high light reflectivity.
When compared to other product options, IMPs offer a cost competitive, visually appealing, and high performance system that allows for quick building enclosure and long-term low maintenance.
